With the announcement of Infinity Ward’s latest installment, ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’, gamers around the globe are beginning to get excited. However, there are some gamers that question the game’s future. With competition arising from Rockstar’s ‘Grand Theft Auto 5′ and DICE’s ‘Battlefield 4′, Call of Duty may not earn its place in gamers’ libraries this year.

When Call of Duty 4 was released in 2007, the game was met with critical acclaim, stating that its multiplayer had been improved two-fold in comparison to Call of Duty 3. As time passed on, Activision continuously released game after game on a yearly basis. This ‘cookie-cutter’ aspect of the franchise devalued the game for most consumers. Although we can expect more of the same, ‘Ghosts’ definately deserves a chance.

There is plenty of room here for innovation and if done right, Infinity Ward can make their latest installment refreshing for most players. Making ‘Ghosts’ unique and different from the crowd will be a major contributing factor to whether or not a player will choose to purchase the game.

I’ll list a couple of known facts about the game:

  • During the singleplayer campaign, you will fight alongside a canine companion. Your companion will play a key role into shaping the story.
  • You may design your own mask to wear during multiplayer matches and possibly during the singleplayer campaign.
  • ‘Ghosts’ will be released for the next-gen consoles.

Those are all the new features we know so far. Other than that, we can expect the game’s multiplayer aspect to be similar to its predecessors.

The reason this game may not sell well isn’t due to the game practically being a clone of its predecessor; it’s due to the immense competition this year. Many gamers can only afford to purchase one new game during the fourth quarter of the year and so they are forced to choose the best deal for their money.

Do they want a game that’s likely to expire within a few months’ time, or do they want a game with more depth to it than running around a closed map shooting people? It’s mainly up to the gamer, but a sophisticated gamer would normally go with a more complex game.

If you’re looking to get your Call of Duty ‘fix’ this year, then this is definitely the game for you. As the game hasn’t been released yet and the details of the game are also under wraps; I can only tell you so much. It’s highly likely that this latest installment will be more of the same, but to the right gamer, the game could also provide many hours of entertainment.

Will you purchase ‘Ghosts’ this year? What are your thoughts on the Call of Duty franchise as a whole? Let us know in the comments section below.
